Defrost this springtime!

Having three kids age seven, five and three means I watch a lot of Disney films. A lot. And the princesses are getting more and more courageous (but that’s for another post). Today I want to look at the two flagship songs from Frozen and Frozen II, both sung by icy blonde haired Elsa. I think both songs have really helpful messages to help us navigate our way out of the global pandemic.

The songs in question are “Let it go” from the first movie and “Into the Unknown” from the second. Both multifaceted works of art that change in the light as they reflect different colours.

The very concept of “the unknown” perfectly sums up the global situation for the past year. However, there is a difference between Elsa’s experience and ours. Elsa had a choice whether to go into the unknown; she was faced with an inner conflict deciding whether or not to leave her home of Arendelle and track down the source of a mysterious voice. All of us however, we did not have a choice. The unknown was forced upon us and we should all be incredibly proud of how we have navigated our way through such an unknown situation. And there is more unknown to come. In the UK, we are getting vaccinated and easing out of lockdown ever so slowly. There is so much hope: this time it is different, there will be permanent change. But there is more unknown in terms of what will the new world look like, what will the workplace be like? Schools? Holidays? Gatherings?

There’s a thousand reasons I should go about my day.

And ignore your whispers which I wish would go away.

– Into the Unknown

I am not someone that deals well with uncertainty. I like to know where I am, what is happening. I do not deal well with the fog of not knowing, and living with this fog is something I have had to get used to: until it passes.

This leads me to talk about “Let it go” that powerful song from the first film. What is it that you need to let go of in relation to your experience of the global pandemic? Do you wish you had “coped better” or done things differently? Whatever it is, just let it go. This has been an incredibly difficult time for every single one of us and we all show and experience stress in different ways. There is no doubt you will have felt it. But start by congratulating yourself on getting through, all the times you chose to smile and stay positive. And those tough moments… the ones you’d rather forget? Let it go.

Let it go, let it go

When I’ll rise like the break of dawn.

-Let it go

I’m going to finish here with one more quote from the song to see you into these increasingly sunny days. This one reminds me of the spring flowers as they push their way up through the ground out of the darkness: there is the certainty of hope, and in the hope there is certainty. Here goes:

It’s time to see what I can do,

To test the limits and break through.

No right, no wrong, no rules for me.

I’m free.
